about us
Hello and welcome to our website.
We are an independent local charity funded by the Legal
Services Commission (under ‘Legal Aid’) and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Our advice and casework on the law and your rights is
confidential, quality-marked, unbiased… and free.
Most clients are referred to us by Bury Citizens Advice Bureau or other rights-advice providers – so you may not have heard of us before. We’re also quite a new Law Centre – we’ve only been at our current address since July 2005.
We’ve already helped to resolve problems for thousands of people living or working in Bury – from simple, general legal enquiries to detailed cases and representation for clients who would otherwise not have been able to get the help they needed.
If we can help you in any way, please call us on 0161 272 0666 or drop in and see us - we’re 3 minutes walk from Bury Metrolink – please click the map link to your right to see where we are.
Yours sincerely
Kevin Miles

get involved
If you are interested in what we do and would like to get involved, there are several ways you can help:
1. Law Centre Volunteer
Volunteer staff play an important role in the Law Centre’s Reception, by helping with administration and on our Helpdesk. This involves dealing with calls from clients or other agencies and signposting new enquiries to appropriate services.
Reception staff do not give advice, so experience or qualification in a legal rights field is not necessary.
We have regular volunteers who are working part-time, some who are retired and some who are studying for legal qualifications.
We need…
a couple of hours of your time each week
a commitment to justice, equality and confidentiality
an ability to pass on information reliably, by telephone or in person
We offer…
a rewarding role in a friendly environment
a central Bury location and travel expenses to get here
For more information please contact Lynn Moore, Administrator on (0161) 272 0666 or e-mail info@burylawcentre.co.uk

2. Pro bono lawyer
We have a team of legal executives, solicitors and barristers, who come to us in their spare time, to help clients who might not otherwise get the advice they need. They offer general legal guidance or employee rights advice at one of our three pro bono clinics.
For an informal chat or further information, please contact David Wildman on (0161) 272 0666 or e-mail info@burylawcentre.co.uk

3. Management Committee member
Our Management Committee guides the work and development of the Law Centre. It currently includes representatives from voluntary sector advice and support agencies as well as individual lawyers with an interest in social justice issues.
Members are also directors of the charitable company, limited by guarantee.
The Committee is elected at the Annual General Meeting and nominations can be made via the Company Secretary.
For more information on Committee membership please contact Kevin Miles, Managing Solicitor and Company Secretary on (0161) 272 0666 or e-mail info@burylawcentre.co.uk
news
2008 - NEW!
Bury Law Centre wins National Award for volunteer legal service.
Free legal advice clinics given by volunteer lawyers at Bury Law Centre have been recognized as some of the best in the country.
Bury’s service won the award for Best Contribution by a Regional Law Firm or Organisation at the LawWorks National Pro Bono Awards in London on Thursday 19th June.
The award was received by Michael McGhie (pictured), who has been an advisor since the scheme began in July 2006 and is now one of nine pro bono lawyers involved.
Development Worker, David Wildman, commented:
‘We are delighted to have received this recognition which highlights the valuable contribution made by all our lawyers – for free and in their own time. To date, they’ve seen 235 people and given 130 hours of free advice, worth around £23,600. From feedback received, the service is well regarded by clients and advice agencies and is filling a genuine gap in provision in the borough.’
Appointments are available by calling Helpdesk (0161) 272 0666

Bury Law Centre Open Day 25 June 2008
The event marked the formal opening of additional interviewing facilities, office space and a training / conference room to expand our base at 8 Bank Street, Bury.
The Mayor of Bury kindly attended along with 40 invited representatives from Bury Metropolitan Borough Council, high street solicitors and a broad range of third sector agencies,.
In her welcome speech, Treasurer Miranda Nathans marked another significant milestone in the growth of Bury Law Centre over it’s first 5 years and thanked
the W O Street Trust Foundation for the grant that had enabled the newly acquired conference and training rooms to be equipped and furnished.
The focus of the day was on partnership work and tailoring the Law Centre’s services to improve access for the vulnerable and disadvantaged local people.
Law Centre staff will now develop further links with four agencies and information from three more will be included in our Helpdesk directory service.
An evening session was held to allow local Council members and colleagues from outside Bury to attend more easily. A strong contingent of individuals and organisations involved in pro bono work led to a productive discussion on developing the Law Centre’s volunteer legal services program, including further training for advisors.
The team at Bury Law Centre are grateful to everyone who attended and look forward to building on new and existing links as a result of the day.
Managing Solicitor Kevin Miles said:
“It was great to be able to bring this many people from diverse voluntary and professional backgrounds into the Law Centre who are all committed to reducing inequality and promoting access to specialist legal advice to further this goal. The additional space we have acquired has made this sort of event possible and importantly has improved our facilities for interviewing clients. ”
