1. What is a Law Centre?
Law Centres use solicitors and other lawyers to meet unmet need for legal advice and representation that transforms people’s lives by protecting their homes, jobs, and their rights.
Bury Law Centre is one of over 50 Law Centres across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each Law Centre is an independent not-for-profit legal practice which is accountable to its local community and which is regulated by the national governing body the Law Centres Federation.
There are strict rules about who is allowed to employ solicitors and provide legal advice to the public. The Solicitors Regulation Authority recognises Law Centres and allows them to employ solicitors to provide legal services to the public.
Law Centres concentrate on providing services for which there is unmet need so there are many areas of law on which we don’t give legal advice such as personal injury where there is already full provision of those services by solicitors firms throughout the borough of Bury.
Every Law Centre is accountable through its Management Committee which is elected from its Members. The elected Management Committee are responsible for guiding the strategy and priorities of the Law Centre in serving its local community.
